A program for professionals providing medical care in remote and austere environments.
Modern industrial, occupational, search and rescue, and humanitarian missions call for knowledgeable and skilled medical personnel to provide optimal care in potentially suboptimal conditions. Whether you work on an oil rig, a research vessel, a USAR team, a correctional facility, or as part of a humanitarian response team, you will be called upon to provide care in relatively unsupervised environments. You will be required to be primary care provider, a public health specialist, a safety guru, and an emergency responder. You may be working without the benefit of communication with a physician to direct and guide you.
Are you ready?
Providing 'care in the streets' as an EMS provider is vastly different from the role you play in the occupational setting. You will be responsible not only for the initial care but often the complete care of individuals who have routine health care needs and complaints. You will be responsible for complex skills that fall outside of routine prehospital care. You need education and experience beyond standard prehospital training.
Recognizing the unique needs of remote and austere settings, CDS
Outdoor School Inc, and Emergency Medical Resource Consulting
International developed the Independent Duty Medic (IDM) and
Advanced Independent Duty Medic (AIDM) curricula. The goal is simple:
To produce well-trained clinicians capable of providing
excellent care in minimally supervised settings.
